About Amritsar
Amritsar the city of pilgrimage was founded in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth guru of the Sikhs; Amritsar is both the center of Sikh & the major city of the Punjab state- where the majority of Sikhs live. Amritsar or pool by which the Sikh Golden Temple is built.
The original site of the city was granted by the Mogul emperor Akbar, but in the year 1761 Ahmad Shah Durani sacked the town & destroyed the temple. It was rebuilt in 1764, & in 1802 was roofed over with copper gilded plates by Ranjit Singh & became known as "the Golden Temple". In 1948, Amritsar was a flashpoint for the terrible events that shook the Punjab.
CLIMATE
The weather in this region of India is seasonal with four distinct seasons. The winter season (November to March) where temperatures ranges from 18 °C to about 0 °C, the hot season (April to June) where temperatures can reach 46 °C , monsoon season (July to September) and post-monsoon (September to November). Amritsar is most temperate between October and March.
PLACES TO VISIT IN AMRITSAR
• Golden Temple : The Golden Temple is the principal shrine of Sikhism. It is surrounded by the sacred Amrita Saras (Pool of Mortality), in which the pilgrims bathe to become spiritually purified.
• Durgiana Temple : The Durgiana Temple is a famous Hindu Shrine founded in 1921 adores the idols of Laxmi Narayan, Radha & Krishna, Sita and Ram.
• Wagah Border : A visit to the Wagah Border is an interesting experience, especially at sunset while Retreat takes place when Indian and Pakistani border troops put up a spectacular display, comparing favourably with the Londons changing of the Guard.
• Jallianwala Bagh : Amritsar was a center of Indian resistance to British rule; in 1919 nearly 400 demonstrators were killed when British troops fired upon a political gathering. Jallianwala Bagh is an important monument dedicated to the martyrs.
• Gurdwara Guru Ki Wadali : Guru Arjan Dev left Amritsar with his family and entourage and settled at Wadali, 5 miles away, to avoid the daily bickerings and intrigues of Pirthi Chand. The villagers welcomed the Guru and gave a bricked Haveli for residence. Guru Hargobind Sahib incarnated at Wadali.
• Gurdwara Sann Sahib : The youngest son of Guru Angad Dev named Dasu, kicked Guru Amar Dass off his throne and asked him to leave Goindwal. Guru Amar Dass left Goindwal for Basarke and reaching there shut himself inside a house for quiet meditation. On the door he wrote, “Whosoever opens the lock of this door, I will not own him as my follower.” Baba Budha broke open the house from the back side, without touching the lock on the front-door, fulfilled the command of the Guru in letter, if not in spirit. Thus he was able to see the Guru, who overwhelmed with his devotion, accompanied the Sikhs to Goindwal. The Gurdwara Sann Sahib stands on that place.
• Gurdwara Tarn Taran Sahib Ji (Darbar Sahib) : When Guru Arjan Dev went on a missionary tour to the Majha region, he chanced upon to see a huge pond near by the village of Khara. The surroundings were also very picturesque. The Guru bought some land from the villagers of Khara and Palasaur. Then he started the work of digging a tank 999’ long and 996’ broad. There he constructed a Gurdwara on the side of the tank. It is known as Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran.
