About Itanagar


Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. Itanagar is situated at the foothills of Himalayas. It comes administratively under Papumpare district. The Nishi, also known as the Nishing, is the major tribe in Itanagar area. As a capital town, Itanagar is well connected with the rest of the country by road and air communications.

The capital derives its name from the historical fort, Itafort, situated in the heart of the city. The fort is identified with Mayapur of Ramachandra, a king of the Jitari dynasty dating from 1360-1550 A.D.

CLIMATE

The climate of Itanagar is very pleasant. Although there is a lot of humidity and considerable heat during summers, mild breeze blows during the day keeping the entire area cool.

HOW TO REACH

By Air : The nearest airport is at Lilabari in Assam, 67 kms from Itanagar.

By Rail : The nearest railway station is Harmuty (near Banderdewa check gate), 33 kms from Itanagar. However the nearest convenient railhead is North Lakhimpur in Assam, 60 kms from Itanagar, which is served by No.9 and No.10 Arunachal fast passenger trains and other local services.

PLACES TO VISIT IN ITANAGAR

Ita Fort : This historical fort of an irregular shape, built mainly with bricks is situated at the heart of the capital complex in Papum Pare district. There are three gates on three sides viz; Eastern, Western and Southern, which is said to be built by Ahom rulers. It is estimated that more than 80 lakhs of bricks, 45 cubic metres of stone and 46,300 man-days were required to build the fort.

The Buddhist Temple : This temple which is located on the top of a hill amidst gorgeous green gardens with yellow roof reflects the extensive Tibetan influence. There is a stupa erected in front of the shrine. The Dalai Lama planted a tree by the side of the shrine.The grounds of the temple afford a good view of Itanagar Town.

Ganga Lake (Gyaker Sinyi) : Ganga a natural Lake locally known as Gyaker Sinyi (confined water), 6km away from Itanagar situated on the foothills of the Himalayas, is a beautiful spot for outings, boating and picnics. This green forest lake surrounded by primeval vegetation, orchids masses on tall trees, tree ferns provides an insight to the magnificent forests of the state.

Polo Park : Adjacent to Anand Bhawan, Swaraj Bhawan is notable as the former Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born here. Built by Pt. Moti Lal Nehru, the historical building of Swaraj Bhawan was donated to the nation in AD 1930, to be used as the headquarters of the Congress Committee.

Tipi : Situated near the banks of the Kameng River, the Orchidarium at Tipi has a rich collection and rare species of orchids. Here scientists create new hybrid varieties of orchids using the latest techniques of biotechnology.

Twang Monastery : Tawang, famous for a 350 year old Buddhist monastery of the Mahayana sect, was built in the 17th century and is perhaps the highest administrative capital in the world. It is a treasure house of old scriptures, priceless images, painted tapestries, books and collection of gold lettered Buddhist scriptures.
