About Ludhiana
The city of Ludhiana with the population of more than 35 Lacs, is the District Headquarters of Ludhiana. Ludhiana is located on the latitude 30.55° North and longitude 75.54° East in the state of Punjab in northern India. The city stands on the Grand Trunk Road from Delhi to Amritsar. Ludhiana is now Punjab's most populated and very rapidly growing metropolitan city. It is on the south bank of the Sutlej river. The city was the sight of a great battle during the first Sikh wars. It was also an important center during the struggle for freedom, and is associated with names like Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Kartar Singh, Baba Santa Singh and Maulana Habibur Rehman. An important industrial town, Ludhiana in Punjab, is Textile and light engineering centre of India. Woollen garment machine tools, dyes, cycle parts, mopeds, sewing machines and motor parts produced here are exported all over the world. Ludhiana accounts for 90% of the country's woollen hosiery industry.
Ludhiana is famous for its hosiery and woolen goods and products from Ludhiana are exported all over the world. For its production of hosiery, Ludhiana is also known as the Manchester of India. It also boasts of the world famous Punjab Agricultural University, which organizes the Kisan Mela every Year. Nearby is Killa Raipur, which is famous for its Rural Olympics.
HOW TO REACH
By Air : The nearest airport is in the state capital Chandigarh which is 100km away from Ludhiana.
By Rail : Ludhiana railway station is well connected with New Delhi and all other important towns of India. Train takes about 4-5 hrs from New Delhi to reach Ludhiana.
By Road : Ludhiana is situated on the Amritsar-Delhi Grand Trunk Road. New Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh and other major cities in Punjab are well linked with Ludhiana through road.
PLACES TO VISIT IN LUDHIANA
• Gurdwara Charan : Gurdwara Charan Kanwal at Machhiwara marks the site of the garden where Guru Gobind Singh had a sip of water and a spell of brief sleep. It was here that his three devotees Dhram Singh, Daga Singh and Manu Singh joined him. The sacred shrine commemorating the historical event, has a beautiful building, worthy of the holy tradition. An annual congregation fair is held in December, corresponding to 9th and 10th of Poh, the days of Guruji stay at Machiwara.
• Gurudwara Manji Sahib Alamgir : This Gurudwara stands at a place where Guru Gobind Singh stayed for a few days after covering journey full of hazards, because of the presence of Mughal military contingents in the area. On reaching Alamgir 11 km from Ludhiana and not finding any drinking water, the Guru shot an arrow into the ground where appeared a spring. This spring has been converted into a tank known as 'Tirsar' (arrow lake).This Gurudwara stands at a place where Guru Gobind Singh stayed for a few days after covering journey full of hazards, because of the presence of Mughal military contingents in the area. On reaching Alamgir 11 km from Ludhiana and not finding any drinking water, the Guru shot an arrow into the ground where appeared a spring. • Gurudwara Shrimanji Sahib Alamgir : Situated 10 Km from Ludhiana, the gurudwara commemorates the place where the Muslim devotees Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan had carried Guru Gobind Singh to safety during the battle. Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708), the last of the Sikh Gurus, transformed the pacifist Sikh sect into a martial community. He introduced rites of initiation into well-organised Sikh army known as the 'Khalsa'. There is a tank where it is believed that the Guruji had shot an arrow into the parched earth to pierce a sub-terrain stream of water. A fair is held there in every December.
• Pir-I-Dastgir shrine : The fort to the north-west of Ludhiana includes the shrine of Pir-I-Dastgir, also known as Abdul Kadir Galani which draws both Hindu and Muslim pilgrims.
