About Palakkad


Palakkad is a city in the state of Kerala in southern India. Palakkad is a land of palm trees and paddy fields. It's known to be rich in flora and fauna. Palakkad is well known for having maintained it's customs & traditions to an incredible degree of perfection. Many rivers that flow in the Bharatapuzha, the life line of Kerala, arise from these mountains. Palakkad has a long history dating back to Paleololithic period. A large number of megalithic relics have been discovered from here.

Palakkad has probably the biggest mountain pass in the world (30-40 Kms) separating the two folds of the Western Ghats on the border of Kerala with Tamil Nadu. It is the chief granary of Kerala, often called the Gateway of Kerala. Palakkad lies at the foot of the gigantic Western ghats on the border of Kerala. Palakkad is known for its historical background and the remnants of Tippu Sulthan's Fort. Palakkad district is situated in the South West Coast of India. This district with mountains, forests, and fertile valleys, rivers and mountain streams are rich in flora and fauna.

By Air : Nearest airport: Coimbatore (55 km)

By Rail : Palakkad Junction Railway Station (5 km from the city) is a major railhead of the Southern Railways.

By Road : Palakkad is connected by an excellent network of roads to all the major cities in India

PLACES TO VISIT IN PALAKKAD

Palakkad Fort : Built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766, the old granite fort situated in the heart of Palakkad town is one of the best preserved in Kerala. Also known as Tipu's fort it is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Malampuzha Garden : This famous picninc spot which comprises a dam, beautifully landscpaed gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. The garden has lush green lawns, well laid out flower beds, cool pools, fountains and pathways. the reservoir offers boating and fishing facilities. The passenger ropeway is the first of its kind in South India.

Fantasy Park : The park is located in the enchanting backdop of the mountain ranges of Malampuzha with the majestic mountain peaks of the Western Ghats overlooking it.

Silent Valley National Park : Rare birds, deer and tiger dwell in this sprawling habitat of endangered virgin tropical forests. perhaps, nowhere else can one also find such a representative collection of peninsular mammals, over a 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moths and other fauna like the Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, the Nilgiri Laughing Thrush and the Lion Tailed Macaque.

Meenvallam : The little known waterfalls at Meenvallam is a combination of enchanting beauty and sceninc splendour. The water falls from nearly 20 to 25 feet and the depth is around 15 to 20 feet. A mini-hydel project is also being implemented here.

Thrithala (75 km from Palakkad) : This place is noted for its monuments and historic ruins. The Siva Temple and the ruins of a mud fort near Thrithala on the Chalissery road are notable cultural monuments. The Kattilmadam Temple, a small granite Buddhist monument on the Pattambi-Guruvayoor road, is of great archaeological importance. It is believed to date back to the 9th/10th century AD. The Paakkanaar memorial, honouring the Pariah saint, stands near Thrithala Koottanad road. This is also the native place of renowned writer and social reformer VT Bhattathiripad.
